Formula

Serum osmolality = Na x 2 + Urea / 2.8 + Glu / 18

If suspecting alcohol is present:

Serum osmolality = Na x 2 + Urea / 2.8 + Glu / 18 + EtOH / 3.7

(Purssell 2001)

Components

  • Sodium (Na) in mEq/L
  • Urea in mg/dL
  • Glucose (Glu) in mg/dL
  • Ethanol (EtOH) in mg/dL
